Motivation Comes and Goes, so how do I Keep it?

The reality is that most of the time, people want to make a change to their body for a reason that they don’t like what they see in the mirror. But, as ‘woo woo’ as it sounds, starting with your WHY is the key in unlocking your potential in 2025. The reason? You guessed it — motivation.

I’ll be the case study today to explain why…

Motivation comes and goes in waves. Even for an online fitness coach, it can be tough to motivate myself to train on days where I didn’t sleep well or when conditions aren’t ideal.

The reality is conditions are NEVER perfect and quite frankly they are RARELY ideal. So what keeps me showing up?

Let me introduce you to Merle Carlson — my grandfather.

For over 50 years, Merle has been opening a local school gym for a group of people to play pickup basketball 3 times a week.

People have come and gone, but he continues to play.

And he doesn’t just sit on one end of the floor. He’s the first to run up the court on a fast break, and has never needed to sub out of the game because he’s tired.

How does he do it? He found something he loved and never let it go. He continues to play and is mentally and physically able to be present with his GREAT grandchildren.

I’ve had the honor of playing basketball with my grandfather for my entire life. And it’s the highlight of my visit every time we are together.

I marvel at his athleticism and ability to continue to move, doing things he loves with people he enjoys.

As we move into 2025, think about the life you want to live.

Wheelchair bound? Unable to get up the stairs? In a nursing home? That’s hard.

Playing pickup basketball, stressing your body in a gym or on a run, or reroofing your house (which he did two years ago in 100 degree heat by himself) — that’s hard too.

So what’s my why? I want to move like Merle for as long as humanly possible. Because playing basketball with your great grandkids sounds a lot better than being pushed in a wheelchair or in a nursing home.
