The ABC's of Happiness
Do you struggle with your happiness/mindset?
I sure have.
Actually more often then I probably care to admit. Being hit with adversity, injury, bad news, etc.
But today, I wanted to share something simple yet incredibly powerful that I’ve started using in my own life, something called the A.B.C.’s of Happiness, from the book The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.
This has been a game-changer in helping me control my attitude and find more fulfillment, regardless of what life throws my way. Here’s how it breaks down:
A - Accept your situation
Acceptance is the first step in taking control. Rather than resisting or wishing things were different, focus on what is. By fully accepting reality, we clear our mental clutter and open ourselves up to effective solutions.
B - Be Grateful for your situation
Even when things aren’t ideal, there’s always something to appreciate. Gratitude allows us to see the good amidst the challenges, helping us reframe the situation and maintain a positive outlook. When we approach life with gratitude, we’re naturally happier and more resilient. This doesn’t mean ‘toxic positivity’, but it does mean looking around at your life and remembering how good you DO have it. If you’re reading this on a computer, tablet, or smart phone, you likely have more than a great percentage of the world.
C - Choose how to react to YOUR Situation
This one is crucial. No matter what happens, we always have a choice in how we RESPOND. Happiness is not about avoiding difficulties; it’s about responding in a way that aligns with who we want to be. Taking ownership of our reactions lets us steer our lives instead of being at the mercy of outside events.
So you’re saying I can’t get mad/frustrated?
No way homie. What we are saying is that if you give an event more than 5 minutes of anger/frustration or negative emotion, you’re losing precious time that you could spend being happy. Accept your situation, be grateful for your situation and what you do have, and choose how you respond. It’s that simple.
Let’s boil this down to a simple analogy…
Thermostat vs. Thermometer: Which One Are You?
A thermostat sets the tone. It adapts to its environment, adjusting when things go off course, always working to maintain balance. A thermometer, however, just reacts to changes in temperature, unable to influence anything around it. Think of being a thermostat as choosing to take control of your mood, responses, and mindset, while a thermometer is just waiting and reacting without agency.
So the next time things feel out of control, remember you have a choice: accept, be grateful, and choose how you respond. It’s in those choices that we find true happiness.
